Medical Acupuncture

Medical Acupuncture is similar to Traditional Chinese Acupuncture. Fundamentally, acupuncture is the practice of inserting sterile needles into specific areas of the body.  Medical acupuncture utilizes a Western medicine approach and correlates corresponding acupuncture points to treat existing symptoms.

When Chinese acupuncture found its popularity outside of China and became a common medical procedure, scientific explanation of acupuncture became important.

The modern scientific explanation is that the needling of acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release neurotransmitters in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain.  Stimulation of these points initiates a nerve impulse that travels to and from the spinal cord and muscles, thereby sending messages to the nervous system that can affect organs, vessels, and glands.

Each part of our body is innervated by certain segments of the spinal cord, and neurotransmitters control much of this sensation.  Acupuncture treatment focuses on the stimulation of the body’s self healing abilities.  It does this by improving the physiological status of the whole body by promoting homeostasis through energy and ultimately maintaining a sound biochemical balance.
